Deck Cadet Duties And Responsibilities

A Deck Cadet is a trainee officer on board a ship. The deck cadet is required to participate in all deck-related activities under the supervision of deck officers. It is the responsibility of the ship’s officer s to ensure that the deck cadet receives proper training in accordance with the Training Record

1.The deck cadet must participate in navigational watchkeeping under the supervision of deck officers. During this period, the cadet must learn the operation and use of navigational equipment and understand the actions required in various situations in compliance with COLREGs.

2.The deck cadet need to actively participate in mooring and unmooring operations under the supervision of deck officers, gaining practical knowledge of safe mooring practices.

3.The deck cadet must acquire proper knowledge of the operation, use, and maintenance of Life-Saving Appliances (LSA) and Fire-Fighting Appliances (FFA).

4. The deck cadet is generally responsible for taking daily soundings of ballast tanks and fresh water tanks, usually conducted every morning.

5. The deck cadet need to take part in cargo watch duties at port under the supervision of deck officers. This includes monitoring cargo operations and understanding safe cargo handling procedures.

6. The deck cadet must learn the How to prepare the port papers and updating various ship files such as LSA and FFA maintenance records.

7. The deck cadet need to assist in pilotage operations, including rigging the pilot ladder and checking the pilot ladder prior to pilot boarding, under the guidance of deck officers. 8. The deck cadet need to participate in routine deck work such as cleaning, painting, chipping, and maintenance tasks under the supervision of deck officers and the bosun

A deck cadet’s job is to learn tasks required to become a competent 3rd Officer —navigation, seamanship, safety, cargo, and discipline.
